New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Play Pokémon to unlock your Wayland session

Show HN: Play Pokémon to unlock your Wayland session 22 by anajimi | 4 comments on Hacker News. Hello everyone! I've created a gameboy emulator to unlock my Wayland session and wanted to share this project to everyone here! I've been a Linux enthusiast since I was a kid. What always captivated me was the freedom to customize my system exactly the way I wanted. With Wayland, we've reached an incredible level of performance. It's like turning your operating system into a video game! I've always been fascinated by the blend of fun and the serious, technical nature of an OS. That’s what inspired me to create this project. I started by studying Wayland, its protocol and how to build a compositor. Then I became particularly intrigued by the concept of a locker, which reminded me a bit of an escape game. That’s when I thought: how cool would it be to solve a puzzle to unlock your session, instead of just typing a password? Since I’ve worked with emulators in the past an...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: I built a tool to replace capcut audio transcription

Show HN: I built a tool to replace capcut audio transcription 7 by correa_brian | 2 comments on Hacker News. I originally added this to my site to speed up my video editing process. Last year I started a youtube channel and for some of my longer videos it's annoying to rely on youtube or capcut to transcribe when Whisper is open source. Capcut also recently updated their T&Cs to say they own your content if you use their app, so I cancelled my subscription. Another use-case I have is recording my claude prompts as audio, transcribing them, and then pasting them into my terminal. I mostly work on the CLI (claude, ffmpeg, whisper), but I wanted to make a browser version. Not reinventing the wheel here, just using Huggingface/Xenova Transformers.js to run Whisper in the browser with a background worker. You can see a demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICLOvAq9vKE If you're interested in building this yourself, there's a bunch of examples on Huggingface https://i...

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: Sidequest.js – Background jobs for Node.js using your database

Show HN: Sidequest.js – Background jobs for Node.js using your database 11 by merencia | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey HN, I'm the maintainer of node-cron (5M+ downloads/month), and I recently built Sidequest.js, a background job runner for Node.js inspired by Oban (Elixir) and Sidekiq (Rails). It solves some common problems I saw with libraries like node-cron: - Jobs don’t block your API: they run in isolated worker threads - No Redis or vendor lock-in: use Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, or MongoDB - Supports retries, uniqueness, concurrency, snoozing, prioritization - Comes with a CLI and a simple dashboard - Works great in monoliths and doesn’t require extra infra Quick start (no signup needed): https://ift.tt/TiALtYk GitHub: https://ift.tt/fRjvVED Would love feedback or feature suggestions. Happy to answer any questions here!
